What we learned from the Chicago Bulls’ gutsy victory over the Portland Trail Blazers

The Chicago Bulls ended their quick road trip out west with a 104-96 win over the Portland Trail Blazers that snapped their two-game slump. Here are two things to take away from the hard-fought win.

DeRozan paces his game
DeMar DeRozan has played long enough in the NBA to know what defenses will throw at him. DeRozan could have easily taken the bulk of the shots with several key guys out for the Bulls. However, he bided his time, instead electing to give his teammates a chance to get theirs. The strategy worked perfectly, as six players scored double-figures for Chicago.

While Deebo started the game setting his teammates up, he ended it doing what he does best—putting the ball in the basket. DeRozan finished with a game-high 20 points on an efficient 8-of-14 shooting. Most of his points came in the fourth quarter, where he had 12 markers to help the Bulls thwart the Blazers’ comeback attempts.

Double big combination
Bulls coach Billy Donovan isn’t keen on putting his two centers on the same floor simultaneously. However, with the frontcourt undermanned due to injuries Patrick Williams and Torrey Craig suffered, the Bulls went with the Nikola Vucevic and Andre Drummond pairing for the second straight game.

Drummond struggled in the first half, committing three fouls in eight minutes, but recovered in the second to finish with 15 points and seven rebounds in only 17 minutes. Vooch, on the other hand, had 14 points and seven boards.
