Since more than a decade ago, Patrick Mahomes and his fiancee Brittany Matthews have been a power couple.
Although they were both high school sweethearts, the Chiefs quarterback and certified fitness trainer met while attending Whitehouse High School in Texas. Yahoo Sports reports that the couple began courting when Mahomes was in the tenth grade.
Matthews documented their formative years in previous Instagram posts, which dated back to 2011 and depicted their time as high school cheerleaders and baseball pitchers, respectively.
The couple can be seen in these posts showing mutual support at a variety of sporting events, including Matthews’ soccer competitions. Together, they participated in high school performances and other events, including the prom.
After graduating from secondary school in 2013, Matthews enrolled at the nearby University of Texas at Tyler to play soccer. Mahomes committed to attend Texas Tech University (approximately 450 miles distant) to play football and baseball after graduating the following year.
“When he ultimately decided to attend Texas Tech, I had a profound realization that he might go pro football,” Matthews told Today in December 2020, the same month she announced her co-ownership of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current.
“Beinghold his athletic and personal development was truly remarkable; it was awe-inspiring to witness him realize his dream.”
By the time the Chiefs selected Mahomes tenth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, both he and Matthews had acquired considerable expertise in executing long-distance passes. Throughout their romantic partnership, Matthews participated in a period of international soccer.
Their relationship flourished even more so during Mahomes’ ascent to widespread recognition. In February 2020, he led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory over the 49ers while Matthews was by his side. He was named MVP of the big game.
