NBA names new MVP trophy after five-time MVP Michael Jordan

The trophy that is awarded to the NBA’s Most Valuable Player is now named after Michael Jordan.

On Tuesday, the National Basketball Association (NBA) revealed six renamed trophies, one of which was the new Michael Jordan Trophy. Throughout his illustrious career, Jordan triumphed in five MVP honors. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who won six games, has more victories.

Adam Silver, the commissioner of the National Basketball Association, issued a statement in which he said, “Our new collection of trophies celebrates some of the greatest and most impactful players in the world of NBA history.” At the same time that we honor the most outstanding players in the league at the end of each season, we also pay respect to the legends who have embodied these coveted accolades.

According to the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Jordan trophy has a height of 23.6 inches and weighs 23.6 pounds. The base of the trophy is six-sided as a “nod to Jordan’s six NBA championships.” Additionally, the base of the trophy stands at a 15-degree angle as a “nod to Jordan’s 15-season career.”

At this point in time, it seems as though there are three candidates competing for the 2022-23 Most Valuable Player award. Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks and Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics are the favorites to win the Most Valuable Player award, with odds of +275 and +300 respectively. Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks is the third favorite.

The Jerry West Trophy will be awarded to the player who is regarded as having the best clutch performance throughout the season, according to the league’s announcement. “the NBA player who best comes through for his teammates in the clutch” will be the recipient of the award for “Clutch Player of the Year.” It was given the name Mr. Clutch in honor of the man whose silhouette is featured in the National Basketball Association emblem.

There are four other trophies that have been named in addition to the Michael Jordan Trophy and the Jerry West Trophy. These trophies are the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy for Defensive Player of the Year, the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy for Rookie of the Year, the John Havlicek Trophy for Sixth Man of the Year, and the George Mikan Trophy for Most Improved Player of the Year.

It has been speculated for a considerable amount of time that the National Basketball Association (NBA) was planning to rename their trophies to honor outstanding players. After Kobe Bryant passed away in 2020, the National Basketball Association (NBA) renamed the All-Star Most Valuable Player trophy after him. Additionally, the NBA’s social justice award is named after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Because Russell has won 11 NBA championships, the Most Valuable Player award for the Finals has been named after him since 2009. In addition, Russell was awarded five regular season MVP honors before he passed away in 2022.
